2019 COAST REGIONAL BUSINESS AWARDS

Next-gen strategy wins for Life
LIFE Health Foods Australia is the big winner at the 2019 Central Coast Regional Business Awards, taking out the Excellence in Innovation category and being named Business of the Year.

The entrepreneurial plant-based company is only five years old but built on a rich history.

The Vegie Delights brand was acquired from Sanitarium and this brand can trace its origins back to 1912 offering Australians a variety of delicious, healthy plant-based foods.

Located in a purpose-built manufacturing facility at Berkeley Vale using primarily Australian ingredients, the business has doubled since inception.

It has added the Bean Supreme wholefood brand and ground-breaking The Alternative Dairy Co and The Alternative Meat Co brands which are providing innovative plant based dairy and meat alternatives to consumers across Australia.

With Australians increasingly looking to cut back on their meat consumption, but many finding traditional plant-based alternatives to be an insufficient replacement, the Alternative Meat Co is the first Australian brand to launch a locally produced product that looks, cooks and tastes like meat.

The brand was the first in Australia to launch three next gen formats (burgers, sausages and mince).

By launching a next generation product into a mainstream category, the Alternative Meat Co has opened the plant-based protein segment to a whole new group of shoppers.

Dream to life

A significant investment in research and development and CAPEX was required to bring the dream to life.

Using meat processing technology, the company was been able to develop a product which rivals its overseas manufactured counterparts.

Over 100 recipe revisions were made until the final formula was settled on, with many light bulb moments on the journey.

Operating in a fast-paced category, The Alternative Meat Co has achieved both integration and commercialisation by making the innovative product readily available to mainstream Australia.

Perfectly emulating a meat-like experience, as well as integrating into the industry’s existing distribution model, The Alternative Meat Co is stocked in every Coles meat aisle, nation-wide.

“We believe that eating more plant-based foods will make Australia both healthier and more sustainable,” the team says.

“Our Alternative Meat Co brand is a significant investment on our behalf to reduce the barriers of taste, texture, and availability that people frequently quote as a hindrance to eating more plant-based foods.

“Our business also made the investment to base our manufacturing in regional Australia, and we have formulated a product from at least 70 per cent Australian sourced ingredients, giving significant employment benefits to our region.

“This is further backed by our corporate charity program which provides meat free sausages for charity barbecues, schools, and other events.”
