TERRIGAL CBD PARKING ADDRESSED

WORK is finally underway on Central Coast Council’s $2.2M project to ease traffic congestion in the Terrigal CBD.

There were no surprises when traffic flow and parking were identified as key themes emerging from the Let’s Talk Terrigal community consultation held earlier this year.

Central Coast Council Acting Director Assets Infrastructure and Business, Boris Bolgoff, said the council had revised its plans for upgrades to the area following suggestions from the community, with stage 1 of the improvements beginning this month.

“The key changes council has made to the original plans include allowing Terrigal Esplanade to remain open to traffic all year round,” Mr Bolgoff said.

“The design does allow for temporary closure of Terrigal Esplanade for special events.

“We have reinstated the existing pedestrian crossing on Pine Tree Lane close to the intersection with Kurrawyba Avenue, and we have also provided a new pedestrian crossing on Kurrawyba Ave near the intersection with Church St to improve pedestrian access to the CBD.”

As one of the region’s major tourism, residential and commercial hubs, it is vital that traffic flow in the busy seaside suburb be addressed.

The stage 1 project focuses on a 500 metre stretch of road from Campbell Crescent around Church Street to Kurrawyba Avenue and includes a new roundabout, new pedestrian traffic lights, modified kerb and guttering and a new road pavement.

The traffic looping which is a major cause of congestion will be addressed by preventing traffic from turning right onto Terrigal Esplanade from Campbell Crescent.

Measures to minimise the impact of construction on the area will include a small daily construction footprint, maintaining traffic flow and pedestrian access and conducting critical works at night on the quieter trading evenings in Terrigal.

If for any reason the works are delayed, the construction area will be minimised, and work will recommence after Easter 2019 to avoid the busy holiday periods.

Mr Bolgoff said the council would address parking issues by investigating a further expansion of Wilson Road car park and with a feasibility study into a boardwalk connecting Terrigal Esplanade to The Haven as state 2 of the project.
