TIME TO DIG DEEP FOR RECOVERY

Here's how you can help
EMMA MCBRIDE
THANKFULLY the Central Coast has been largely spared by the bushfires that have destroyed other coastal regions across the country during this unprecedented bushfire season.
I would like to extend my heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the families who have lost loved ones in this crisis.

The economic costs of the national bushfire disaster are still being calculated but they are immense. The direct economic impact of the fires has been conservatively estimated at $2.5B and is expected to climb.

Given how lucky we’ve been let’s dig deep and lend a hand to those in need.

“It’s My Shout”, “Spend with Them” and “Tradies for Fire Affected Communities” are three initiatives that have quickly gained momentum.

It’s My Shout is an online platform created by Tenille Bull that lets people buy virtual products to support businesses in East Gippsland, Victoria. The towns in East Gippsland rely on seasonal tourism and summer is their peak season.

The It’s My Shout project gives you an opportunity to pay forward a coffee, book a virtual room in a B&B  or pay for a virtual product to sponsor a Gippsland business through this crisis.

Spend with Them is an Instagram page set up by NSW South Coast locals, Turin Pitt and Grace McBride, to urge people across the country to get behind businesses in communities impacted by bushfires, not only during the crisis but in the months to come as they try to rebuild.

Spend with Them connects shoppers with clothing labels, surf shops, farms, wineries, distilleries and more in to fire affected areas across Australia. Between January 1 and 7 it had garnered 70,000 followers.

Tradies for Fire Affected Communities has been started by Melbourne-based carpenter Piers Smart. If you have a qualified trade and are willing to help you can register with this facebook group. Over 9000 tradies had already registered by early January.

The fires have been wiping out coastal and mountain communities but our farmers have continued to struggle with drought. Two excellent local groups that are making a contribution are Coasties Drought Aid and the Central Coast Disaster Recovery Group – both searchable on facebook.

Of course, donations are always gratefully accepted via:
