Christmas BBQ for homeless

Chamber spreads festive cheer

By Di Bartok

COOKING and serving up food at the Parramatta Mission’s Christmas barbecue for the homeless has been an important cause of Parramatta Chamber of Commerce for more than 15 years.

More than 30 Chamber members, with the support of local businesses, donned their Santa hats and aprons as they wielded their tongs to whip up a hearty lunch for more than 200 Mission regulars last week.

Chamber president Roger Byrne said the day was always enjoyable for volunteers as they spread Christmas cheer.

“We are very proud of our business community and the way they rally around a community event,” Mr Byrne said.

“This year for the first time, we also had Christmas in July for the homeless, another successful event.”

The chamber and Parramatta Mission’s Meal Plus donated food, music and gifts on the day.

“Grateful thanks goes to all involved for their help and generosity with special thanks to Professional Insurance Brokers who provided the meat and he many businesses and individuals who contributed to the spirit of the day,” Mr Byrne said.

Mission CEO Keith Hamilton said the Christmas lunches, in July and December, were significant events to the homeless and those who were isolated.

“The lunches send out an important message to these vulnerable people that the business community cares about them,” Rev Hamilton said.

“It is about more than the food - the social interaction is important as well.”

During the week, about 90 people regularly have a nutritious meal at Meals Plus in Macquarie St, so the Christmas events drew more than twice that amount.
